What exactly is included in the £1,620 weekly fee?
The fee covers 24-hour nursing or residential care, all meals (freshly cooked on-site with alternatives available), laundry and housekeeping, the full activities programme, and access to all facilities including the lounge areas, gardens, hair salon and café. There are no hidden charges. Any optional personal spending — such as newspapers, toiletries, or private appointments — remains the responsibility of the resident, and we provide a clear monthly spending statement to families.
Is there a benefit to funding care privately rather than through the council?
Yes — significantly so. When you self-fund, you have complete freedom to choose which home your loved one moves to, which room they occupy, and when they move in. There are no waiting lists determined by a council, and no placement in a home that wasn't your first choice. Families who fund privately consistently tell us that peace of mind — knowing their loved one is in exactly the right place — is worth every penny.
Can I claim the NHS Funded Nursing Care (FNC) contribution?
If your loved one requires nursing care (as opposed to purely residential care), you are likely entitled to the NHS FNC payment of £267.68 per week. This is paid directly to Oaklands and effectively reduces your weekly outgoing — even for private self-funders. Our team will help you make this claim and ensure you're not missing out on support you're entitled to.
What happens if our assets reduce below the self-funding threshold?
We understand that financial circumstances can change. If your assets fall below the threshold (currently £23,250 in England), Local Authority funding may become available — and Oaklands accepts Local Authority funding with a family top-up, which means your loved one would not need to move. We'd work with you and your local authority to ensure continuity of care. We recommend speaking with a specialist care fees advisor early to plan ahead.
Can we arrange a visit before making any decision?
Absolutely — and we actively encourage it. A visit is the single best way to understand whether Oaklands is right for your family. Come and meet Liz and the team, see the rooms (including ensuite options), explore the gardens and lounges, and enjoy a coffee in the café. There is no obligation whatsoever.
